Responsible AI

An Interdisciplinary Virtual Conference

At our virtual conference in June 2020 we discussed some of the most pressing technological, philosophical, ethical and legal challenges of AI and AI Systems for the next decade from a global and transdisciplinary perspective. To this end we welcomed researchers, scholars, experts from various fields, and lawmakers to exchange thoughts and ideas about fundamental and specific key elements of responsible AI. The virtual exchange with participants from different continents (Asia, Australia, USA, and Europe) and from different disciplines (AI, computer science, medicine, neurosciences, philosophy, and law) gave an oppurtunity to find a common basis and new answers to pressing questions of AI governance and regulation. For more information have a look at the videos from our conference.

Aims of the FRIAS Saltus! Group

Already today, the development and use of intelligent systems heavily impacts many different sectors, including industrial production, health care, military technology and data processing. This raises important philosophical, ethical, legal, social and political questions concerning the interaction between humans and AI. Due to their nature, these questions require a multidisciplinary research approach.

The FRIAS Saltus! Group Responsible Artificial Intelligence started in fall 2018 as FRIAS Research Focus 2018/2019 and consists of Prof. Wolfram Burgard (Robotics), Dr. Philipp Kellmeyer (Medicine), Prof. Oliver Müller (Philosophy) and Prof. Silja Vöneky (Law). The research group’s aim is to develop a framework for development and use of AI that is ethically, legally and politically viable and sustainable, but still has the potential for social innovation and progress. This framework for a responsible AI would serve as an alternative to the largely unregulated ‘disruptive AI” of big technology companies, and the 'dystopic AI' used for social control and coercion.

In order to incorporate international and interdisciplinary perspectives on the effective governance of AI, the research group will bring together internal and guest researchers from various fields at the FRIAS.

Book Project: Responsible Governance of Artificial Intelligence (2020-2021)

Silja Vöneky, Philipp Kellymeyer, Oliver Müller and Wolfram Burgard edit a book, that shall be published 2021, and comprises of more than 20 articles written by participants of virtual conference "Global Perspectives on Responsible AI". The book will spell out in more detail what can be meant by "Responsible Governance of AI" and some of the most pressing technological, philosophical, ethical and legal challenges of AI and AI systems will be discussed from a global and transdisciplinary perspective. The exchange with distinguished scholars from different continents (Asia, Australia, USA, and Europe) and from different disciplines (AI, computer science, medicine, neuroscience, philosophy, and law) at the June 2020 virtual conference serves as the basis to find new answers for pressing questions of responsible AI governance and regulation.

The forthcoming book will consist of the following six sections: AI Governance - Data Protection and Discrimination; General Principles of AI Ethics and Law; How to frame AI induced Risks; AI, Corporations and AI-based Economy; AI based Medicine and Neurotechnology; and AI induced Security Challenges.
