Welcome!

The Chair of International Economic Law with special focus on East Asia was established in February of 2007. So far, it is the only chair of jurisprudence at a German university dedicated to East Asian and specifically to Chinese law.  Its establishment follows naturally from the Albert-Ludwigs-University’s traditional role and core competences as one of Germany’s leading universities in the field of international academic exchange.
The chair is committed to a wide range of tasks:
  • instruction of German students in East Asian law in courses geared towards practical application

  • establishment of a library dedicated to Chinese law

  • participation in research projects and exchange programs based on the cooperation between China and Germany ( e.g. academic programs for Chinese lawyers, support and academic supervision of Chinese law students in Freiburg, establishment of a series of research papers dealing with Asian law)

  • coordination of a joint project of the Chinese University for Law and Politics of Beijing and the five German Universities of Freiburg, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Cologne to establish a Chinese-German Institute of Jurisprudence in Beijing

The chair will cooperate closely with the Department of Sinology and other departments at Freiburg University concerned with China in order to found a Centre for Chinese Studies. The Centre’s aim is to become a centre of interdisciplinary research in East Asian culture, language, economy and law.
